Some special verbs, called linking verbs, may be followed by a subject complement
DEFINITION: SUBJECT COMPLEMENT
A subject complement is a noun, pronoun, or adjective that renames or describes the subject. It always follows a linking verb.
Examples of subject complements:
1) Joseph (S) is(V) cool(SC).
2) Morgan (S) seems(V) very happy (SC) today. (Bonus question: What part of speech is "today"?)
DEFINTION: LINKING VERBS
Being verbs: am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been
Verbs of sensation: feel, taste, etc.
Other linking verbs: appear, become, seem
