WRITING LESSON: Types of Sentences

(Every serious writer needs to know these. Serious architects know the names of different parts of buildings, and serious writers should know the names of different kinds of sentences.)


DEFINITION

There are four basic types of sentences:

1. DECLARATIVE: Makes a statement.

2. INTERROGATIVE: Asks a question.

3. IMPERATIVE: Gives an order or a command or makes a request.

4. EXCLAMATORY: Expresses great emotion.

DEFINITION
These basic types of sentences can also be placed in one of the following categories:

SIMPLE SENTENCE -- one independent clause
Example: Morgan works hard.

COMPOUND SENTENCE -- two or more independent clauses
Example: Madeline loves to write and her mom loves to read her writing.


COMPLEX SENTENCE -- an independent clause
with one or more dependent clauses functioning as modifiers
Example: Lily rides a skateboard like a bird rides the breeze.

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE -- two or more independent
clauses with one or more dependent clauses functioning as modifiers
Example: When school was over for the day, Asia ran to her car, but Julia was cool and just walked slowly.
